Hi there, I’ve updated with a couple of new photos, hope you don’t mind.
Well, tomorrow is Super Bowl Sunday. This meant nothing to me in the past other than an annoyance because 60 minutes was cancelled; we would go on about our usual weekend, JT would watch a little bit of the game here and there or keep track of it on his iPhone. We would tune into the half-time show from time to time.
A couple of years ago I suggested we watch the game and make Super Bowl Food; JT loved the idea, and we’ve been doing it ever since. Tomorrow we’re having my friend Kim, her kid CoCo, and my nephew Brian for a big Super Bowl Feast. It really just gives me an excuse to cook, you know how I love to feed people! I was trying to tip my menu toward food served in the cities of the two competing teams (I bet you’re a bit surprised I even know who they are!) New England Patriots and the New York Giants (and no, I did not google it! :-P), so I just renamed the recipe titles. I can do that, you know.
The menu:
New England Bacon-wrapped scallops and bacon wrapped dates
Cheer’s Healthy Nachos with a cheddar cheese sauce and salsa
Manhattan Honey Garlic Wings and Boston Rubbed Ribs (I’m doing a chai-inspired dry rub)
New York Lees 19 Ingredient Slaw (actually, the first time we had this slaw was in Manhattan; sadly his restaurant failed and he’s back in TO)
New York Style Chocolate Cheesecake with a Cherry Pie Topping
I’ll be posting the recipes as I make them in the next day or so. I know, I’m a bit behind the band wagon, but perhaps you’ll book mark it for next year.
Jed, over at Sports Glutton and Greg at Rufus’ Food and Spirits Guide have an amazing selection of recipes to peruse for your Super Bowl Extravaganza! Have a great weekend.
[…] our household. In fact, a month doesn’t go by without a version of this slaw surfacing (here, here, here, here, here, here and here) offering up left-overs for the entire week. Yes, we love it THAT […]

Hi Eva–Great menu you developed. I chuckled when I read a few Facebook updates of friends having “Madonna Bowl” parties with the football game volume on zero. Clearly you’re in the spirit of eating lots of good stuff!

Great idea on using the 2 teams as a theme for the food. I love to set myself little challenges like this too.
I don’t really care for sports, but when we had the Rugby World Cup here, we got into the spirit by drawing a team and cooking themed food. It was great fun.

Hi Genie! Love that pic of Tofu, so cute. I think I watched more of the ads rather than the game; it was fun having people over.

sounds like a great menu for a super bowl gathering! I too am not into watching the game but more for the entertainment and a reason to get together and cook some fun food.

Thanks Lisa. There were vegetable sticks with low fat dip so we had a good offering of healthy and traditional Super Bowl food.

We are attending a Superbowl party, though I just go to see people and for the commercials and the food since I’m not a big football fan. 😉 Your spread sounds just wonderful, Eva, and I hope you guys have fun!

You too Betsy. These are the times I wish our TV was in the living room instead of the family room in our basement! Oh well, closer to the kitchen where all the food is…Cheers!

That slaw and cheesecake sound awesome – I don’t enjoy watching sports (I even had to ask someone if the superbowl was football or baseball :p) but as A_Boleyn said, I’d definitely join in the eating part. I’d come over, scarf all the food, and then be on my merry way before the first ball was even punted upfield 😀

I can assure you, Charles, the game will be on downstairs but the food and the fun will be in the kitchen, as usual during our parties! I’m going to serve buffet style so everyone can eat as much or as little as desired,

That’s funny Charles…scarfing down the food. It was a great success, judging by the left overs! I’m having the slaw with shrimp for lunch today…it’s one of my favourites.

Wow! That’s a great menu for a night in front of the TV. I wish I was coming over! I’ll look forward to those recipes and as we don’t get the super bowl here in Australia, I won’t have to book mark them until next year, I can just go right ahead and cook them whenever!

That’s interesting, Charlie, apparently there are a billion people world-wide (outside of the US) who watch the game! It’ll be about the food for us!

I think I’ll have to wait on the baking project I had in mind as I spent too much time on my feet yesterday and this morning my right hip is killing me. I should have taken a pain tablet last night but all I had was Tylenol with Codeine so I was reluctant to take it. I can barely walk and have to visit my mom today as well.
Maybe later in the week though I’m going to look for pearl sugar at Bulk Barn on my way home as well as a gyros plate from the Greek takeaway close to home as well. 🙂

Oh Maria, I am so sorry to hear that. Yesterday I did something to my right knee and it feels like the cap is going to pop off. It seems I am aggravating more and more each minute…why is that? Hope you feel better soon and are back in the kitchen baking away! Enjoy your Gyros plate; I love Greek food!

I hope your knee gets better soon.
The gyros place was closed on Sunday (same with the kitchen equipment supply place I went to) so I ended up with Taco Bell and turkish delight from Bulk Barn. I’m stuffed. 🙂

Not exactly the variety that your post had Greg, but then again, we’re only four adults (maybe 3.5) and 1 kid!

haha, love it! I don’t follow football nor really know anything about the game, but I do love an occasion to celebrate, so you know I’m all in!! (besides, the ads are so fun and I always love observing the post-game hysteria ;-)). What a great menu Eva… so many yummy ideas for us! (I didn’t have luck linking to the bacon wraps or nachos… will try again later). Cheers!

Thanks Kelly, I’ll check back on the links and redo them. You may be interested in a website I came across last year called whilethemenwatch.com it’s a couple of ladies chit chatting while their guys watch the game. Some of the commentary is funny.
