Well, it’s past Super Bowl and we all know how that turned out…. Of course, I have such little interest in it (sorry Jed) that I can’t even be bothered to insert the winning team name in a blog I set up on the weekend. Sigh.
Although Super Bowl Sunday was our feeding frenzy theme my excitement wasn’t exactly for the New England Patriots or even the New York Giants, it WAS ABSOLUTELY about the feast we prepared. We started with the New England Bacon Wrapped Scallops and Bacon Wrapped Dates; now honestly, what isn’t better wrapped in bacon? It’s a mind numbing easy recipe, so hold on tight.
New England Bacon Wrapped Scallops
Ingredients:
- 12
Nova ScotiaNew England Scallops (I like this size because they are small enough to pop into your mouth – about 1″ in diametre) - 6 strips smoked bacon (nothing fancy) sliced in half cross-wise to give you 12 slices
- 12 toothpicks
Directions:
- Par cook the bacon between a few sheets of paper towel in the microwave (2 minutes on high should do it). This is to get some of the water of out it and start the fat to render. Set aside and allow to cool.
- Pre heat the oven to 375°F / 190°C
- Take a slice of bacon and wrap tightly around a scallop and secure with the toothpick. Repeat until done.
- Bake until scallop is no longer translucent and bacon is crispy.
- Serve warm.

Eva, this dish isn’t something I knew a lot about from my culture but I think I’ve figured out the name thing … if it’s something white wrapped in the bacon, like the scallops or raw oysters, they’re called ‘angels on horseback’. If it’s something dark wrapped in bacon, like dates, prunes or chicken livers, they’re called ‘devils on horseback’. 🙂

Thanks Maraia (sorry, I had no idea I had spelled your name incorrectly, my apologies). Well, that’s something I did not know. Thanks for the info.

Echoing a popular opinion here, but yeah – what *isn’t* better when it’s wrapped in bacon – ok, maybe not cupcakes!
Your little appetizers look so pretty Eva – I’m sure they were a huge success 🙂

Maria, my Mom used to make the one’s with chicken liver…I had no idea any of these were called devils on horseback, such a funny name.

Do my eyes deceive me or is there a bird in the picture? ;-). Love these bite size scallops, and yes, all tastes better wrapped in bacon… Love the idea of dates too… how yummy! Sounds like you had a fun Super Bowl afternoon/evening Eva. That’s great.

Thanks Kelly. Indeed it is a little bird. I bought him at a local decorator store and thought it might be fun to have him in the photo. It was quite the evening, Kelly, I even won our little wagering pool!

A salty, smoky strip of bacon wrapped around a sweet and tender scallop. All I’d need is a nice dip to take it over the top. I’m not as familiar with bacon wrapped dates but I’m willing to try one or six in for research purposes. 🙂

I laughed out loud with your 1 or 6 comment, Maria! At one of our parties a few years ago, a friend’s husband had no idea how many he ate of these little bites, until he got home and pulled about 20 toothpicks out of his pocket!

When the nibbles are that good, who counts the number of toothpicks?
By the way, I didn’t work today so I did my baking after all. Though I’m embarrassed to post my pictures after seeing the ones you posted the last couple of days. The runner on the table, silver, glassware, flower arrangements … you really ARE a perfectionist and artistic, and a food stylist although you don’t list THAT on your 7 words. 🙂

I think my friends was surprised he ate that many!!! I’m glad you did your baking today, please don’t be embarrassed to post your photos. Thank you Maria, I am quite flattered! I am fortunate to work in a studio that specializes in food!

Love your idea to.par cook the bacon between a few sheets of paper towel in the microwave to get some of the water out, what a great idea, must remember.

I like my bacon cooked a bit crispy so that is why I par cook them. Plus it’s a lot less smoky in the oven.

Oh no, I hope that bird doesn’t eat your appies before your guests get to them! (sorry couldn’t resist) Since both you and Charlie have posted on these little “devils” I am going to have to make them. My one ponytail would eat an entire pound of bacon if I let her… So I know they would go over big!!!!

I can’t believe I haven’t made the bacon wrapped dates for you guys, Barb! The ponytails will love them! I’m going to try Charlie’s version sometime.

Hi Eva, that is hilarious that you have posted the ‘devils on horseback’ type of appetiser that I posted almost on the same day – different version but the same thing. Like you say, ‘What isn’t good wrapped in bacon’. I finished off the last of the ones I cooked today and they were delicious. Such a treat!

It’s very funny how things work the way they do, Charlie. I had the menu planned before I saw your post, so it was purely coincidence! I like your take on it with the prunes…I shall have to try that next time. I usually make a bunch and freeze them.
