I know what you’re thinking, “WTF?” It’s weird, it’s bizarre but the food’s good (for breakfast) and the service is also good. And it makes for an interesting post for my blog. The Flying Saucer Restaurant has been around since 1972 and has been pleasing crowds from all over, ever since. It’s not fine dining, by any stretch of the imagination but we ARE, after all, in Niagara Falls. Their slogan is FLYING SAUCER RESTAURANT is known throughout the galaxy for OUT OF THE WORLD food at DOWN TO EARTH PRICES – served at the speed of light! It was served very quickly, that’s for sure.
We’d been here before, last year, we knew the portions were enormous, so we decided to share the E.T. Special. It was plenty of food, believe me. With a couple of cups of coffee, we were all set until lunch! If you’re ever in the Niagara Area and feel like a plain old fashioned greasy spoon breakfast, then The Flying Saucer restaurant is the place for you! But get there before 10am, because that’s when all the weirdos come out for breakfast and the crazy line-ups begin.
Ruthie was feeling a little under the weather from the night before (too much partying!) so she was taking it easy and had only coffee that morning.
Overall rating of The Flying Saucer Restaurant: Decor 4/5 (yes, it even looks flying saucery inside!), service 5/5, food 4/5, Value 4/5, Noise: 3/5 (1 being very noisy, and 5 being very quiet).

Haha what a fun place! And E.T. is still one of my favourite movies so I think I’d order that too 😛 And there are weirdos? That’s a bit of a bonus!

Okay – confession time – I ADORE greasy spoons! Given the choice to eat anywhere, I’d chose that sort of place every time for breakfast! I’m glad it got a good review! It sounds like a great meal to SPLIT! I can’t imagine eating the whole thing!

That is so cute, Ann. I’ve only recently (maybe the last 10 years) have gained an appreciation of greasy spoons, prior to that I had a real disdain. Some have some viable specialties that are not to be missed. I like to watch Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and am blown away by how devoted some places are to the specialties. It’s really inspiring. I have to admit, the portions are a bit scary. We had breakfast once in the Joliet IHOP in Illinois and that plate could have easily served FOUR people. It’s just crazy!

I love discovering diner style greasy spoons and we’ve never been to the Flying Saucer so I’m delighted to learn about this Eva. The price sure seems right too. Gotta love that Extraterrestrial menu! :).

Sounds like quite a feast. Did you really even need lunch? I love how there’s sausages and bacon and ham. Who needs vegetables when you can have 3 forms of meat 🙂
Every now then we have a big breakfast at a local cafe. It’s quite expensive and we can cook it easily for much less at home, but it’s a nice luxury that we treat ourselves to.
We don’t have home fries here in New Zealand, but from looking at photos online, it looks much like what we just call “hash”.
Is Texas toast just super thick toast or is it garlic buttered as well?

Hi Genie, it was a lot of food but I left most of the home fries (which are very similar to your hash) and I didn’t even touch the toast. Texas toast is really just thickly cut toast, toasted and buttered.
I follow a few blogs from down under and I am usually utterly surprised at the cost of food at restaurants. I don’t think NZ is as bad as Australia, or maybe I just haven’t seen enough. It’s often 3-4X what we would pay in Canada!

Here in NZ, you can get a cheap feed if you know where to look, but often the quality is so bad that it’s not worth it. I pay around $12US for 1 cooked breakfast at my favourite cafe. But for the same price, I could buy a carton of eggs, a loaf of nice bread, a pack of bacon a couple of large mushrooms and a few sausages to feed several people. I’ve been making hash browns from scratch at home lately too. I don’t deep fry them like some places do.

Aaah, I miss “greasy spoons”… They don’t really have those in France. There is a place in Paris though called “Breakfast in America” which serves diner-style breakfasts. I might have to go back there some time 🙂 Food served at the speed of light is never a bad a thing – Seems like I spend half my life waiting for food to be served in a restaurant :p

What a great spot! You just can’t always go to the 5 star restaurants. We all need a little whimsy in our lives every once in a while. And if that means boarding a flying saucer for breakfast, so be it!

Hilarious… I suppose it started up when people thought they saw “flying saucers” everywhere, what a neat “blast from the past” and great to get a good meal at great prices. We always try to share a few plates when eating out now.

I’ve heard Flat Ruthie is a heavy drinker. Perhaps she was too hung over to enjoy her breakfast. That’s an enormous pile up of food and I’m not surprised you couldn’t finish it. And I can’t believe the price! Food like that in Sydney would cost about $40.00. I have a sister living in NYC and she can’t believe what we pay to eat out here.
