It’s obvious I’m getting a lot of mileage out of our New York trip on the blog, but it was such a fun time, I just have to share a couple more fun things to do, and they are food related.
The Chelsea Market: Located in Chelsea at 75 9th Avenue (Between 15th and 16th Streets) it’s s bustling food hub. In fact, the Food Network US is located in this building. Although I can’t say that I’ve seen any one of my food network fav’s hanging around this market but I think I did spy Snooki on 6th Avenue earlier this day! (allow me to redeem myself, ordinarily I wouldn’t know what Snooki looks like or who she was, but literally the day before we left, I was standing at a checkout of a grocery store and there she was starring up at me on the cover of one of those entertainment rags. So really, it was by accident that I even knew what the woman looks like!).
OK, on to the market: there’s Buon Italia, an incredible shop that sells foods of Italy; I used to get my dried chestnuts there as I knew of nowhere else to get them.
And the pastas, all imported from Italy. I just love the simplicity of the packaging. I can close my eyes and imagine I am in Italy in this store.
Then there is Amy’s Breads, an enormous bakery that you can see them working all day!
And I’ve already talked about the wonderful kitchen story, Bowery Kitchen Supply; you can literally spend an hour in this store. The Filling Station when I have bought some wonderful olive oils (but sadly, this time I was concerned about my luggage weight). Then we had a little wine tasting at The Chelsea Wine Vault. And of course you must check out all of the wonderful eateries that may be found in this market. It’s a great trip, but be warned, go to the bathroom before you get there, the line-up was about 100 people long (thank goodness I didn’t need to go!).
Eataly (yes, that is correct!); Eataly is a restaurant (or several) grocery store, bakery, coffee shop, wine shop, butcher and fish monger all in one convenient location at 200 5th Avenue, a short walk from our hotel.
Beautifully merchandised Italian products.
I would certainly recommend a trip to this destination.
I thought you might enjoy a little architecture too.
I stopped at Eataly on my last trip to NYC as well! There were so many things to oooh and ahhh over. I refrained from buying anything because the lines were very long!

Us too, the lines were crazy; but it sure was an ooooh and ahhhh place! Thanks Amber.

As I was reading I began to wonder if you were going to mention Eataly. š Liz and I love the craziness of that place. I’ve actually been sitting on a post about the place since January, but decided that Liz needs to write it because of the fact she is a New Yorker, Italian, and has visited Italy multiple times.

Oh yes, Jed, It was amazing! People were having lunch or dinner at 4pm! Or just eating! I loved the packaging on shelves! And the food; I had to restrain from buying things as we didn’t have a kitchen in our room. It’s such a cool place.
Have you been to Zabar’s on the upper west side? Not as refined, but definitely cool, and the kitchen store on the second level! Now I wish I was going back again soon.

No I can’t say we’ve been to Zabar’s, but it’s on the list now next time we go back!

I just know I’m going to appreciate New York so much more the next time I visit. The last time we were there we could hardly have been considered foodies. I can’t wait!

I wish I had known about this area when I was in New York last year, Eva. Oh well, I’ll probably go again someday — and it sounds like I should take an empty suitcase or post things home.

Thanks Sharyn, it sure was a great trip. I wish we didn’t have the airline weight restrictions ā foodstuff is heavy!

My little Italian bakery and grocery store are great but they don’t have the sheer SIZE of what’s available in New York.

Ojojoj, I’m so jealous – food heaven to be sure! I bet that bakery smells fantastic too!

Great post. So, now I have even more places on my list when I next go to the Big Apple. When travelling, I love going to the local food markets.
As for Snooki; be glad you only know who she is from the supermarket tabloid covers. My kids have actually sat and watched “Jersey Shore” and how they have not fried their brains at this point, I will never know.

Thanks Judy, the food specialty stores and markets are indeed fun to visit in NYC.
I watched about five minutes of Jersey Shore on YouTube and was disgusted. Incredibly stupid dialogue, real or not.

Was at Chelsea Market but did not have much time to look around, next time. Did have dinner at the Lobster place, lobser roll was great also stopped for gelato and then on to the high line for the tour, needed more time..

I’m glad you enjoyed the lobster roll, Norma; for me, I cannot get past the bun (isn’t it usually just a hotdog bun?). The market is a good 1-2 hour walk, especially if you go into the stores to browse all the cool stuff.

How I love to go to Italian markets in places like New York, Boston, or San Francisco! The places you’ve spotlighted are just what I’d look for and would thoroughly enjoy. It’s a funny thing. When in NYC, no matter whether I’m walking or “cabbing it”, it’s amazing how many time I’ll pass the Flatiron building. Forget Rome. All roads lead to the Flatiron. š

Thanks John, you will have to give me the scoop of your favourite shops in Chicago next time I plan a trip there. Sadly our trip in late June will be to Wisconsin only. At least it will be R&R instead of running around the big city!

Ahhh, the Flat Iron Building. My Alfie has a book, ‘A Walk Around New York’ that he LOVES and it has a page on that building. When Archie went to NYC last year (for 6 months) I made him promise to take a photo of that building for his little brother. And he stood in the middle of the road and grabbed a shot! Great to know he fulfills his promises. I love the look of that shop – I could lose a fortune there xx

Wow, that must have been an amazing trip for Archie and it’s so cute his little brother love the book about New York. I hope some day your entire family will get to enjoy this wonderful city.
About the store, it was quite expensive, but perhaps for you it may be ‘normal’ cost!

Thanks Sissi. I’m sure Switzerland has its share of amazing foodie experiences too. I always love going into a Migros and checking out the cheese and chocolate aisles (never ceases to amaze me how much selection you have of both!). I haven’t been to Switzerland in a very long time, but I’m sure our travels will take us there again.
