You may already know this, but I’m a bit slow, so I thought I’d pass along a very cool feature I just discovered in WordPress. You may have noticed that I have finally responded to some comments and responses from quite some time ago (no, I wasn’t being rude, I just never saw them). I have never been able to figure out what is the best place to see all the comments in WordPress, but I think I have finally got it covered. This won’t work on the iPhone app, but it does work on the desktop browser version. If you go to the top right hand side of your screen, you will see this:
Click on the bubble and you get this:
Click on “View All” and your commenting universe suddenly all makes sense. Sigh.
No more having to scroll down through reams of comments to find that one you haven’t responded to. I’m sure you all know this by now, but if I can save one person from foolishly missing one lovely comment or response to a comment you’ve made on a blog that you follow, then I will be happy. Happier now that I have this cocktail. Surely it must be 4pm somewhere in the world.
I know what you’re thinking: I thought you preferred the traditional martini and since when do you post cocktails? Well, the answer is yes on both counts, but while visiting the cute Lake Geneva, Wisconsin on the weekend, we stopped by a restaurant for cocktails and I, for the first time, tried Effin Cucumber Vodka (OK, I had a sip of Paul’s Bloody Mary). The cucumber flavour was exceptional, it really came through even with all the seasonings a Bloody Mary has. Very impressive indeed. I wanted to get a bottle, but we had already purchased our maximum limit (Smirnoff Triple Distilled 1.75L for $20, this usually sells for $54.95 in Ontario!). So I decided I would try to recreate the flavours captured in this lovely drink for a refreshing summer-time cocktail. After all, it is Thursday.
Greg over at Rufus’ Food and Spirits Guide showed us how to make Cucumber Gin but since I am not much of a Gin drinker(bad experience at Uni, must have been something I ate ;-)). I decided to re invent it with Vodka.
I’ll serve this cocktail in a martini glass, because it’s so damn sexy, you can serve it over ice in a tall glass like Greg did, or in an old fashioned. I’ll be the one in the summer dress, shocking pink stiletto’s sipping from a martini glass on the outdoor sectional. Cheers!
Cucumber Lime Martini
Serves 2
Ingredients:
- 45 mL (1.5 oz) Vodka
- 10-12 slices cucumber (I used mini English cucumbers)
- zest of 1 lime
- 2-4 tbsp lime cordial
Directions:
- A couple of hours before you wish to consume the cocktail, add the cucumber and lime zest to the vodka and refrigerate (or freeze).
- When ready to serve, give the vodka a good stir and add the lime cordial; strain into martini glasses and garnish with a fresh slice of lime or cucumber
- Cheers!
Thanks for the tip Eva! I hadn’t noticed this feature either.
Also, your martini looks lovely and refreshing!

You crack me up Eva. You were never tempted to click on that little orange box before?? :-)Well you’ve got the power now and know how to use it!
As for any type of cucumber drink…I’m all for it. Tell me there is vodka in it and you’ve made my day!

Thanks Jed. Believe it or not, I usually respond to comments on my lowly iPhone 3Gs (for goodness sake, will they EVER release the 5G?) so I virtually never see the desktop features. This is however a feature I could use on my phone too.
Yes, vodka does cheer up any drink very well.

Haha, I love this wordpress feature. Seriously saved me from many many rage attacks. I used to subscribe by email to new comments and then I’d go to bed and wake up to about a hundred emails dinging into my inbox at a rapid pace… this feature… ❤
I'm not much of a drinker, and almost never touch the harder liquors so I'll sit this one out, but it looks tasty and cold at least 🙂

Thank you Charles. The cucumbers also infuse water quite nicely. Just slice up a regular cucumber and drop it in some water and refrigerate for a couple of hours. Replace with new sliced cucumbers for serving and enjoy. It’s very refreshing.

Thanks for the WP info, Eva, I am still trying to get a handle on this blogging thing. I will hop over to see how many comments I have missed.
You cocktail looks very refreshing. Cucumber are in season so I guess you will be creating many more cucumber drinks and dishes.

Thanks Norma. I wouldn’t be so bad but WP keeps updating the software, so it’s almost like every month you have to learn something new! Sigh.

It looks gorgeous, Eva and so refreshing! I am a big fan of cucumber (since we all pay attention to our waistline, maybe in different ways, you probably imagine that I fill up salads and lots of cold dishes with low-calorie cucumber all year round. Moreover, I love its taste, so it’s not as if I were forcing myself. Anyway, I have never tried cucumber in a cocktail and you have just convinced me to give it a try (although I don’t have vodka; I will try with another alcohol). Thank you for the inspiration!
I have a different layout in my wordpress admin page (maybe because I have my own domain). The plugin I find extraordinary is the one that sends an email when someone answers to our comment. I still remember when I discovered it on a friend’s blog. It was a revelation and I strongly advise it to everyone. (I hope no one minds receiving it and those who are interested in answers are more than happy to know the answer and maybe even to answer it etc.).

I should have bought my own domain name too, Sissi, but it started out as a little sideline hobby, I didn’t imagine it could get so involved. Perhaps for my birthday next weekend, I shall buy myself my domain name!

Although I’d have to be pretty drunk to enjoy cucumber maybe the rest of the drink would help me change my mind. 🙂 Love the martini glasses in any case.

Gorgeous photo (#1), public service and cool drinks — how can you lose? I don’t drink clear spirits myself — I’m strongly in the rum, tequila and whiskey camp for the few times that I do drink, but the cucumber looks good.

Thank you very much Sharyn. And I don’t often drink rum, tequila or whiskey. You can also try the cucumber in just plain water, it’s very refreshing and delicious.

Ah yes, gin and University…I didn’t drink gin again until very recently, but now there are so many of them, they are quite good. If you ever want to try it again I’d recommend Plymouth…very smooth and easy going. It was my entree back into the gin world. Your martini looks so refreshing, perfect for summer! I had seen and used the comment box, but didn’t see the all button either, so thanks for that! I’m having problems with people falling off my reader or email or both. Used to be that everyone I followed via email was on my reader, too…but now they go missing. Have you had this problem?

I Betsy, thank you for your kind words. I will see if that brand is available here, and if so, I shall try it. The problem is you have to put a second mortgage on your house here to buy booze, so experimenting can be expensive!
I don’t use my reader that much, only on my phone, so I can’t say that it has happened to me.

RE booze expense, that is happening here as well. The price of liquor has gone up 30% in the last year…I think in part due to the recent revival popularity of cocktails!
LikeLike
Wow, that’s a huge increase. The Province controls our booze, the LCBO, and taxes the heck out of it. For the largest single booze purchasers in the world, we sure don’t get any deals. At least you can buy your booze at grocery stores where they might have sales. A sale at the LCBO is maybe a dollar off, but I’ve seen as ridiculous as ten cents!

Actually, we can only buy wine and beer in the grocery stores here…you have to go to a liquor store to get any type of liquor or liqueur. At least our liquor stores are not state controlled in GA like they are in AL, where it’s even higher! The high cost here is less about taxes and more about demand and supply, I think.

OK, I won’t gripe about our prices as much from now on, Betsy. 😉

I agree with Charlie. Who hasn’t had a bad experience with gin? And I never got over mine. This sounds great but I, also, like the idea of using it to make a Bloody Mary. I can’t see how I could lose. I’d have a refreshing cocktail either way. Thanks for the idea, Eva, and for the heads-up on the comment box. l’d never hit the “All” button so this was a revelation. 🙂

I haven’t gotten over my bad experience either! I loved it in the bloody mary mix, perhaps you can get Effin Cucumber Vodka where you are in Chicago. You’ve been very helpful with WP issues in the past, so thank you!
