I wanted to come up with an alternative to adding sugar to my BBQ sauce for the pulled pork, after all, we reduced the fat by using the Tenderloin and I thought of Mango. Mango pairs really well with savoury dishes so I cam up with this recipe and tried it out tonight, slow cooking my tenderloin until it literally falls apart.
Mango BBQ Sauce
Makes about 250 mL
Ingredients:
- 100 g mango (you could use more, but I didn’t want it too sweet)
- 50 g chopped onions
- 120 g tomatoes (I just used vine ripened because our lovely neighbours gave us some)
- 3 large cloves garlic, finely minced
- 1 tbsp Éva’s Hot Sauce
- 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
- 1 tsp salt
- water
Directions:
- Put everything into the container of your immersion blender and blend until smooth, adding water until you reach your desired consistency.
- Press through a fine sieve to get rid of the lumps, tomato seeds and such.
- You can can cook this down for about 30 minutes or just use it in your recipe as is (I did for my pulled pork as it cooks for several hours on the BBQ and cooks down anyway).
Yum! I’ve always wanted to make my own BBQ sauce. We have a lot of BBQs at our place over summer. I think this will need to go on my summer list this year. Love the addition of Mango. So tropical and summery.

Thanks Genie, papaya would work too! I just love the sweet and hot combo.

Great idea to use the mango in the sauce. I’ll be bookmarking this one for sure … will need to improvise on the Eva’s hot sauce though!

Great idea…I’ve used peaches before, but I love mango with chili and I can imagine that this sauce is so delicious with pork. In fact, it sounds so good you could almost lap it up by itself! Love the splash of balsamic, too.

What a great idea adding the mango here for that natural touch of sweetness. I bet it tasted delightful especially with a little Eva sauce in the mix…the tenderloin sounds delish (but I’m also eyeing those french fries… ;-)).

Thanks Kelly, those ‘fries’ are julienned mangoes! hehehehe!

Oh that’s too funny… of course they are! I see it now but didn’t then. Shifting paradigms… in the end, we see what we want ;-). I must have had a craving for the good ol’ fashioned Irish potato to accompany your lovely zippy sauce…have a great weekend Eva! :).

That looks really good Eva! Mango BBQ – such a brilliant idea!! I have cooked with mango a lot of times, but never in a sauce.
We had a neighbor who grew loads of vegetables on his yard. He would often gift us with tomatoes, eggplants, or even Zucchini. We moved and that was the end of it.

Never thought of putting mango in a BBQ sauce..love the idea! I’ve always had mango salsa and things like that with my meat, but mango bbq sauce sounds even better!

Thanks Divya, it worked out very well, and I really enjoyed the pulled pork made from the tenderloin, not nearly as rich or as fatty. Are you still doing more of a raw diet? I’ll go and check out your blog again, I’m afraid I’ve been bad at looking at a lot of blogs lately.

No worries! I’m about 40% raw and the rest cooked. Usually lunch will be a raw meal, but dinner is always cooked!

This sauce sounds really good! And we have mangoes all year round. This would be just perfect. I do like the idea of using this for pulled pork instead of the sickly sweet stuff I come across.

Thanks Ping, welcome back. I love the flavour of the mango with the meat, but next time I’ll try it with Sissi’s mango chili sauce for something different, plus I love sweet with heat.

Sounds like a great way to get sweetness in your bbq sauce without adding spoonfuls of sugar. 🙂 I’m still intending to make ‘real’ pulled pork with a pork butt one day just to know what that’s like.

Great idea Eva! I’m always trying to eliminate the need for adding in sugar and this not only adds sweetness through the mango but also a nice flavor addition. I know you made this super easy through the blender and I so love simply prepared foods! Caramelizing onions though can also add a bit of sweetness; that what I do for my pasta sauce instead of adding in a bit of sugar as some recipes call for.

Thanks Linda, it worked out very well. If you don’t use sugar much then it will taste rather sweet, but if you prefer something sweeter, it will disappoint. I am not much of a sugar eater, other than in fruit so it suited my taste perfectly. If it’s not quite sweet enough, you could always add some dried, reconstituted apricots or even prunes which are extremely sweet.

I will definitely try this, Eva.. I am trying to cut down sugar (although I feed it to everyone else.. Ooops) and the idea of mango to sweeten a sauce is just wonderful!! I guess it is that time of year.. I’ll have to get out my slow cooker!! Good-bye to the sweet cabin life!!

That slow cooker will have to wait as our temperatures are still soaring into the high 20°C here in Toronto, Smidge. Thank goodness too as I am not ready to put on boots just yet.

By creating your own sauce, Eva, you’ve pretty much re-written the pulled pork rule book. Use tenderloin rather than shoulder and use a mango sauce rather than a sugary concoction. I like it and my next pulled pork will be “alla Eva”. First, though, I need to find a new crockpot. This will stymie me for weeks. Too many choices and too many conflicting opinions/reviews.

Thank you kindly John. It’s become a staple at our house, JT adores it.
I suggest you try it on the BBQ in one of those old fashioned enameled roasting pans (you know the speckled blue one’s our Mom’s used to have?).
Incidentally, I entered a contest on Food Network Canada’s Roger Mooking’s blog to send in a photo of your New Year’s Eve and won ‘runner up’. They liked my photo so much, they sent me the same prize as the winner, a lovely brand new crock pot! Ours had recently plummeted from the cupboard and smashed into smithereens! https://kitcheninspirations.wordpress.com/2010/02/03/runner-up-prize-from-roger-mookings-its-a-new-year-contest/
It’s a pretty good one, but then again, I never look a gift horse in the mouth. Saved me the money from buying it myself!

Thanks C, I love the subtle heat up front and then it kicks in a little later. It’s quite a complex sauce and I’m glad I wrote it down for future (BB – Before Blogging, I would just wing it and like my Mom, would not be able to reproduce a winner no matter how hard I tried!).

Mango freezes well, but you should do an IQF. This allows you to use as much or as little as you wish.
Must start putting some of my tomatoes in the freezer for winter use and for making your sauce during the winter months.

Thanks Norma, what is an IQF?
LikeLike
Oops, sorry, IQF stands for ‘individual quick frozen’.
When champagne mangoes (my favorite) goes on sale and the quality is good, I but heaps. Peel, cut into chunks, spread on plastic wrap lined sheet pan, cover with plastic wrap, place in freezer. Once frozen, transfer to freezer bag, use as needed.

Are they good raw too after defrosting? I’m definitely trying this trick! This is going to sound weird but I totally feel disadvantaged if the freezer is empty.

I like to eat them partially frozen but also good completely defrosted. (This is supposed to answer your 9/6, 2:11 p.m. question but I don’t know how to do so.)

It sounds like a wonderful mango sauce for meat. I preserve every year mango and chili sauce, but it’s much simpler (only mango, chili, sugar and vinegar), nonetheless mango makes it exceptional. As you say, mango is perfect served with savoury dishes, so I make sure I have my jars ready to be opened all year long.

Next time I make this pulled pork I will use you mango chili sauce, Sissi; I have the same love of sweet and hot as you do as we’ve discussed many times. The vinegar would add the perfect tanginess to the sauce too.

Thanks Maureen, we’re really making an effort on reducing our calories and the tenderloin is a perfect switch-up. It needs the sauce but then the shoulder version needs it too. I’d live to hear what you think if you make it. It literally falls apart after two hours.
