Happy Halloween everyone! Hurricane Sandy is sure putting a damper on things in the eastern seaboard, and even though we’re quite far from the ocean, we are getting deluged with rain and high winds. Not pretty at all. I particularly feel bad for the kiddies tonight who will likely have to brave the elements with winter coats over their carefully considered and crafted costumes. But I heard through my FB friends that Halloween has been postponed to Saturday in some US cities! What do you think about that?
Our building had their annual Halloween hall crawl, but I had to change my plans for the phantom of the opera costume for fear of melting my face off with the mask, so I went as Dracula instead. It turned out the Kim and I were one of the few who dressed up, talk about feeling rare, oh well. Free booze and food helped us get over that pretty quickly!
I’m sure you’ve heard by now, Sandy wreaked havoc in our neighbourhood and toppled a very large evergreen tree knocking out power including our house (although not every house has a blackout!). I just finished filling the freezer with left overs and sale meats, so this turn of events is not appreciated. I am hoping I won’t have to toss the lot. Fortunately when the tree fell over, it fell into the street and nothing was damaged other than the power lines. I already know of two people who’ve had car damage from fallen limbs (tree, not human).
Since JT has to work on Halloween night (he traded with a guy who has two young children) I decided not to doll the house up; instead I was going to go over to Kim’s (boss, neighbour, friend) with a bottle of vino and we’ll hand out candy together and get silly. But instead I’ll be cleaning out the fridge and freezer. And since I love this time of year so much, I thought I’d run around the hood and takes some pics of some of the decorated homes. Hope you enjoy them.
My friend’s daughter had a Halloween party last Sunday so I baked up a batch of the monster fingers which I found on Angie’s blog last year. This year I was able to fashion them a bit better and I had the great idea of dipping the cut ends into the jam to make them look even grosser! Thanks Angie, these will never get old on this side of the planet!

Love your costume Eva! I can’t believe that Sandy caused a tree to fall in your neighborhood! What a crazy storm. It was pretty quiet here. I heard the waves were pretty wicked on the lake, and it was pretty windy downtown, but other than that…very fortunate. I just can’t believe the devastation this storm has caused. Words feel inadequate.

So true. Thank you for the compliment.

Eva you make a dashing vampire! The whore is not very whorish; she looks like a Hungarian housewife ready to tackle a huge vat of cabbage rolls. But I am very glad Sandy spared your limbs Eva.

Thanks Zsuzsa! I’ll mention it to Kim! Yes, we were spared by other standards.

And what great decorations by your neighbours đŸ™‚

First, you make a darling Dracula! And those finger cookies are just fabulous. Hope your frozen goods can be salvaged…and glad your house was spared from that huge tree…yikes.

Thank you kindly Liz. The chest freezer was OK, but everything had to be tossed from the fridge freezer. We were lucky, unlike other brothers and sisters to the south.

You look sooooo cool all dressed up. Those sure are spooky fingers, I would scream if I came across one on a dark night. Sorry about your long power outage, has it being restored now?

Hi Norma, yes the power came back on yesterday. The chest freezer fared well, nothing even came close to defrosting, but the freezer in the fridge was a bust — everything had to be tossed. I guess the motor compressor warmed everything up once the power went out. I still feel lucky though, we didn’t have the devastation that a lot of our southern brothers and sisters had.

Thank you kindly, Lorraine. We do go a little overboard in BWV, but I love how fun it all is. My friend Kim had a fog machine going which really scared the little ones.

You did an amazing job on those witches’ fingers, Eva. I enjoyed seeing the local outdoor decorations. Maybe someone should put up a sign next to the fallen tree … “Beware of Giant”. I’m glad it didn’t do TOO much damage.
I’m sorry you had to clean out your fridge/freezer. In the summer blackout of ‘whatever year’ we lost power for about 24 hrs and the chest freezer was kept closed. The ice cream didn’t even get soft.

Thanks Maria, that’s promising about the chest freezer. JT cleaned out the upstairs freezer before heading out to work, but my task is the chest freezer tonight.

I’m sad that you and JT weren’t able to do the Phantom theme, but dracula is always a good go to.
Love the torture you were throwing towards John and I’ll do the same towards Liz who feels the same way. đŸ˜‰
And usually I would care for a finger, but the doctor said I need to “cut” back on them this year.

JT was actually a very successful Phantom of the Opera…I may post that pic later. We cut the bottom of the nose out so that the mask was a lot cooler.
Too bad about the Dr.’s suggestion…they were quite tasty digits!

Great Halloween costume! And those cookies are fantastic! They’re realistic enough that I’m not sure I could bring myself to make and enjoy these cookies myself.
Hopefully the worst of Hurricane Sandy is over! I’m hoping it will stop raining by this evening so I can hand out treats.

Thanks Amber. We’re getting rain until Saturday!

Sorry about the power loss, Eva, and the cause behind it. That was such a great tree and it will take a lifetime for another to replace it.
Those fingers you made are something else and I did pass over *that* pic faster than you might imagine. đŸ™‚ Sounds like your hall crawl woud be fun. Shame on your neighbors for not playing along and bless those who supplied the libations!

Thanks John. The cookie fingers were inhaled by the kiddies! They loved that they were so gory. I wouldn’t have liked that as much at that age. Of course, I only ever dressed up in Mom’s fancy cloths with makeup, nail polish and heals! A pretty lady is what I always wanted to be when I dressed for Halloween. I should drag out some of those old photos.

I love seeing the houses all dressed up with the Autumn leaves all over the ground – we don’t get that here. And those fingers are incredible. You are such a talent, Eva. They are so life-like. And I can’t believe you were one of only two to get dressed up for the party – that’s a bit like me recently when I went to that Zoo animal party dressed as a leopard in the tight-fitting cat-suit. Everyone else just went as themselves. Like you say, the free food and alcohol helps in those situations xx

Oh, I remember that post Charlie, and you went to considerable effort to get your costume too. I bet everyone was jealous because you looked so hot!
As the evening progressed there were a few others who dressed, but talk about a bunch of party poopers!
Thank you for your lovely compliment, this year they turned out much better than last year, much more life like. Apparently the kids inhaled them! đŸ˜‰

Hope both your places are OK too Karen, I kept thinking about you and how nervous you must be since you are away.
Power outage seems to be the extent of our damage. Today we will inventory the fridge and freezer.

I almost called you last night to see if you wanted some house-guests! Hotel seemed easier!
If your Mom makes these, the trick is to roll them out with your fingers and just the rolling creates ‘knuckles’ then I added the horizontal lines for the knuckles to accent them. The almond slices are adhered with red jam. Thanks, they do look pretty cool.

Thanks CCU. The cookie shapes like knuckles by rolling them with your fingers, then add a few lines to accent the knuckle and you’re good to go!
