In our neighbourhood, Bloor West Village we have an abundance (some might even say too many) of specific retailers and services in about 1 km (0.62 mile) length:
- 36 dentists
- 11 optometrists/eye glass dispensaries
- 42 hair/nail salons
- 6 green grocers
- 8 Pubs/Gastro Pubs/Sports Bars
- 5 Japanese/Thai restaurants!
So when Sushi 2Go opened a restaurant in the Village we were surprised! Sushi 2Go is a relatively small chain of Japanese Restaurants all over the GTA, in fact there is another one about a kilometre (0.62 miles) away. There are a few high-end Japanese restaurants in the GTA but most are quick, luncheon-type places and Sushi 2Go is no different. I’m not saying you can’t have a nice dinner there, it’s just pretty simple with typical ambiance. We had lunch there a few weeks before Christmas and even though we’ve been back again, I found it a little expensive for what it was.
The restaurant is contemporarily decorated with a few Japanese touches. The sushi kitchen is toward the back and there are about 10-15 tables, not huge by any stretch. Both times we’ve been there, there were only 2 other people dining in, although there were takeout orders being fulfilled and picked up.
I ordered the Tempura Udon Noodle in hot soup with tempura ($14.95). It was quite flavourful and the tempura was plentiful, I even took most of the tempura home for another meal.
JT ordered the Sushi & Tempura Bento Box ($17.95) which was comprised of 7 pieces of nigiri, 3 california roll & tempura. It was also very tasty but $18 for lunch doesn’t sit well with me. Next time we’re going to share the Tempura Udon Soup (JT will have the tempura and I’ll have the Udon!)
Overall rating of Sushi 2Go (in my opinion): Decor 3/5, service 3.5/5, food 4/5, Value 2/5, Noise: 5/5 (1 being very noisy, and 5 being very quiet).
Disclaimer: We purchased our meals for full price and my opinions just that, my opinions.

Eva, I wish I had so many beauty/hair salons here… Maybe the competition would be bigger and they would have a better quality+service+lower prices…
Just looking at tempura makes me hungry…
Personally, the only sushi place I go to in my city is a takeaway/self bar if I need a quick lunch and don’t have time to cook or if I go on a long car trip (I love maki instead of sandwiches! of course it’s not me who drives 😉 ). One feels so much lighter…. What bothers me most is that all the places I know use low quality rice and as someone who spends quite a lot of money on rice (I buy high quality, but in 5 kg bags and we go through a bag like this in one month), I am angry to see how much they charge for cheapest rice they can find. One gets easily accustomed to good stuff 😉
(PS Sorry, I’m late commenting again… you are so regular with your posts!).

Hi Sissi, no need to apologize, we are all busy and understand.
Surprisingly, our salons are not competitively priced, they are rather high. In fact so much so I generally only go every second time my hair needs colour and I do the in-between myself (it’s about 150 canadian dollars for a trim and colour and my salon is a less expensive one; my friend goes to one and she pays over $300!)
I am not a connoisseur of rice, to be honest I probably could not tell how much better one is over another, but it would be an interesting test. I also prefer Maki instead of sushi, I’d rather fill up on protein than carbs!

I’m not a connoisseur either, but once you start buying a more expensive brand, you find the previous cheap one really bad… It’s like with wine for example 😉
I have been buying the cheapest (US) sushi rice for years and then once a shop assistant encouraged me to buy a better brand, produced by a Japanese company in Italy (those imported from Japan have outrageous prices). I never got back to the cheapest American rice, which in comparison to what they sell in certain sushi places wasn’t that bad, so you imagine…
Hairdressers in Canada sound expensive (in comparison to what I understood were prices of food for example). Here hairdressers are reasonably priced in comparison.

My goodness – I wonder how everyone is able to stay afloat? There must be a hell of a lot of people needing dental care and their nails done! 😀
That’s a lot of tempura – making me drool a bit. I’ve been meaning to make tempura udon for a while. Have sourced some udon noodles now, but can’t find the damn stuff I need to make the stock from, grr!

Hi Charles, indeed there must be because the nail places are always busy!
That tempura soup would be perfect for the very cold day we are experiencing today!

Wow, that is a huge concentration of businesses for a neighborhood! I agree, $18 for a bento box for lunch is rather high unless he’s the best sushi master in town. 🙂

Hi Betsy, it’s a great neighbourhood, that’s for sure.

Well, I’m all for sports bars and restos 😉 — that does seem a little pricey for lunch but it sounds like the food is good quality which makes the occasional trip worthwhile. Just had a big bowl of delicious soup for lunch — can’t get enough this time of year — so I’d be right there with you ordering the udon! :).

If I move there I’ll remember not to open a nail bar. So many nail bars! You wonder how they could all stay in business. It’s great that a new restaurant has come your way. We like to eat locally but like you, we don’t have a great range of cuisines. Tonight we went out of our area just so we could have Chinese! xx

Hi Charlie, I often wonder the same thing, but they do seem to be busy all the time. Too bad you have to travel to get a range of cuisines that you enjoy.

Why so many dentists? Do you have a theory? Agree with Uru, your photos captured the food beautifully.

Hi Norma, no idea why so many dentists but I can tell you that it’s an older neighbourhood with predominately Polish and Yugoslavian immigrants, so maybe there is a link.
Thank you for your lovely compliment.

I also have a problem paying $18 for lunch since for only $21 I can have great AYCE sushi supper. Still, it did look very tasty.

Hi Maria, your sushi supper does sound quite affordable.

Any place that gets a 4/5 for food and a 5/5 for noise is a winner for me. It does look good to eat!
