There is a new Japanese restaurant in our hood and it’s called Kenkou Sushi. It literally took over the space of a previous Japanese chain called Sushi 2 Go and sadly, they still haven’t changed the signage (apparently, they are waiting for good weather). Personally, I think this is a mistake as Sushi 2 Go was expensive and inferior quality than the present family owned resto. For some bizarre reason, chain restaurants usually don’t do well in my little hood so this bodes well for Kenkou Sushi. I’ve been 3 times since the beginning of February and it’s been excellent each time. It’s not fancy, but the food is fresh, tasty and nicely presented and best of all, it’s quite reasonable. If you are looking for a good Japanese restaurant in Toronto’s west end, I suggest you pop in, it’s right beside Jolanta Interiors at the corner of Bloor and Willard, you’ll need to look for Sushi 2 Go until the weather gets nicer!
The restaurant is simply decorated, with the sushi kitchen lining the back wall. There are only 7 tables but they do takeout. I like a place a little fancier for dinner, but I’ll certainly do takeout for dinner.
We decided to have a late lunch and make it the main meal of the day, but I still couldn’t finish my entire Bento Box! Both lunches came with Miso Soup, Small Salad, 6 California Rolls, 5 pieces of tempura (including 2 shrimps) and glass noodles. JT ordered the salmon teriyaki (because he is making more of an effort to eat more fish), sitting on a bed of sautéed veggies. The salmon looked to be about 110-120 g (good solid 4 oz).
I ordered the Sashimi Bento Box that came with 10 pieces of very fresh fish. They are not specific what fish comes out, it depends on what is fresh each day. They were wonderful and flavourful. As I previously mentioned, I was unable to finish it all, so the leftovers (I did eat all of the raw fish) will be lunch tomorrow. It’s excellent value and I love that the family members work there. So if you’re in the mood for Sushi, give them a go.

Looks like a great restaurant! And the bento boxes do look huge. I really must make tempura soon…. your shrimp looks so crisp and perfect!
PS Maki sushi (ugly, messy but still delicious) is one of the quickest meals I can imagine and I often make it I the summer, also as an office lunch, but I never manage to find good quality raw fish, so it’s with anything I have in the fridge. Obviously I don’t prepare sashimi!

Sushi is so fussy, although I have done it before, I usually just have it when I go out.

That price is excellent! I find that bento boxes are huge, especially if you eat the rice too.

Yes, that is quite reasonable for a bento in Toronto. And you definitely get a second meal out of it.

Love having neighborhood places like that! Sounds like a terrific place. And we’re big fans of what we call linner — late lunch/early dinner. Fun post — thanks.

Always wonderful to have a good eatery in the hood and even better when the price is reasonable. Nice to have ambience but given a choice I would choose good food over ambience.

Ambiance, for me, is always important but even more so at dinner but food quality definitely wins every time.

Oh my goodness, those bento boxes look so good! I just had breakfast but still craving :o) It’s so fun when a good joint opens up in the hood – I know what you mean about the sign but sometimes it’s those little eclectic things about a humble place that set it apart in our minds and make it memorable — I hope they make it, it sounds like they deserve it. We were in Bloor West for about 10 minutes last summer 😉 picked up delicious fruit pies at one of the bakeries on our way to my husband’s brother’s place in the beach (they were d’lish by the way). Always enjoy your recos Eva and hang on to the hope that we may one day be able to sit and enjoy a meal at a restaurant during one of our whirlwind trips home.

Hi Kelly, I totally understand the demands on your time when you return to the old country (hehehe), but I’ll still hope that one day our paths shall cross again. The bakeries are outstanding in our little hood, glad you found a a memorable pie to take to your SILs.

How much I wish I coiuld go out with you for sushi, I would be in good company. 🙂 My husband doesn’t like sushi, so I don’t get to eat sushi that often.

That would be a blast Helene, do give me a shout when/if you ever come to Toronto! My hubby usually goes for cooked food in Japanese places.

I’ve got a couple of pricey places in my ‘hood’ so I still go to the AYCE place on the west end cause the prices are in my budget. 🙂

Sushi is one of my favourite things to go out for because it’s something I don’t usually make.

I make it but not in the variety that I can get it at. And, when you’re on your own, it’s not cost effective to buy all the different ingredients and take the time to prep them for one of each kind of roll.
