As you may well know, I am not a fan of buying ready-made seasonings. I always try to make my own and that way I can customize it to my own taste. This one is a perfect example. It’s wonderful on fish or chicken and it’s salted to my taste instead of the ridiculous amounts of salt in store-bought versions. The sugar is optional, I have used erythritol as well, works similarly and the taste is still good due to the flavours of the other ingredients.
This seasoning is particularly good on grilled meats, we’ve been grilling on the Big Green Egg all winter and loving it. The intense smoke infuses into everything we grill and it is awesome.
Tex-Mex Seasoning
Ingredients:
- 10 g dehydrated onion flakes
- 5 g granulated garlic
- pinch of smoked sweet paprika
- pinch of cayenne pepper
- 3 g cumin
- 10 g brown sugar
- salt to taste
Directions:
- Combine all of the ingredients in your spice grinder and grind until onion and garlic are pulverized and the blend is a fine powder.
- Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry spot.
I’m with you, making your own seasoning is the way to go. Easy to get it to your own taste and much less expensive.

Eva, I don’t want to sound snobbish, but apart from the Japanese 7-ingredient chilli mix (shichimi togarashi fantastic, if you can buy it, without any enhancers and hardly spicy), I don’t think I’ve ever bought a spice mixture. I have even stopped buying garam masala and make my own….
Anyway, your Tex-Mex seasoning sounds delicious and reminds me I don’t cook Mexican often enough….

I agree. Make your own and be in control. Of course, I could be talking about almost anything, but I meant spice mixes. GREG

Sounds like you made a good investment with the big egg; grilling through the winter is so handy. Yummy combination of seasonings Eva – customizing is ideal and this one is painless to put together, always a bonus! Will give it a try. Thanks.

I’d want a little chile powder in there in addition to the cayenne, but otherwise perfect! Thanks.

This is fabulous! I resisted seasoning mixtures for decades. I’ve only recently embraced them. I was just stubborn about using the individual spices and herbs!

I totally agree! When we were newlyweds, I’m sure I used lots of packets to season our food—those were the recipes I got fro my friends. I wing my Tex-Mex seasoning, so I must try yours. As you can imagine, sometimes it’s great, other times just so-so, LOL.
