I had meant to post this around Super Bowl 2013 but as luck would have it, I didn’t get it all together and hence the later post. But fear not, these babies are good enough to serve any old time, and not just for Super Bowl! And the best part is that they freeze perfectly, so make up the entire batch, and toss into a zippy locky baggie and freeze, now you’re ready to entertain any old time. The second best part is that they are not deep fried. I used my silicon cake pop pan to make these slightly smaller than a mini-muffin, but you can use a mini muffin pan with success but it will make fewer corn dogs.
Mini Corn Dogs
I saw the photos on Google here, but I based the recipe on Fred’s not here Corn Bread. Use your favourite cornbread recipe instead.
Makes 51 small corn dogs (in the half shape of a cake pop)
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup medium ground corn meal
- 3/4 cup all purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3/4 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 egg
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/8 cup vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup finely chopped leeks
- 3/4 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 5 regular hot dogs (I used Yves vegetarian dogs because I was serving them to a vegetarian)
Directions:
- Pre heat oven to 400°F. I used my silicon cake pop pan to make these slightly smaller than a mini-muffin. But you can use a mini muffin pan with success but it will make fewer corn dogs.
- Sift cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a bowl.
- Blend eggs, milk and oil in another bowl.
- Stir wet ingredients into dry.
- Fold in the shredded cheese and onion.
- Cut up the hot dogs into 1-1.5cm slices (I got about 8 or so out of each dog)
- Spoon molds about 3/4 full and insert one dog so that it sinks in but doesn’t get covered on top.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes or until firm and golden.
- Serve warm with a honey mustard dipping sauce or ketchup (I’ve been meaning to make this one, from Sissi or this one from John but haven’t gotten around to it).
I love these cute little finger foods. And what a great way to transform corn dogs into these adorable mini bites!

Oh eva, you baffled me at this hour of night 🙂
I thought, mm savoury… see the photo and think, ‘oh sweet?!’
I read the ingredients and realise you’re very cunning. And these corn dogs are cleverly put together 🙂

Thanks Fati, although it does have a bit if sugar in in it’s savoury. The original recipe had quite a bit of chili in it so the heat balanced the sweet. Because we were serving to kiddies I left out the chili.

So cute and such a great appetizer idea! It would be fun to situate the hot dogs or sausages end up and put a little stick through them like a corn dog…maybe some dipping sauce? Hmm. I can see I’m going to have to make these at some point, Eva!

Thank you kindly Betsy, they were rather tasty. Sausages sound like a great change up, and the stick through them sounds like fun too!

These mini corn dogs look lovely and delicious. Who need Super bowl to enjoy them? I don’t. hehehe….good to know they freeze well. I’ll definitely make more and freeze some for later or “emergency” entertaining or ccraving. 😛

These are just too cute Eva. I’ve never had a corn dog much less a mini one but if I was going to, I’d be heading down to your home in Bloor West for a nibble of your version :). Very fun bite idea!

Thanks Kelly, I like these mini bites so you can have a taste but not worry about over indulging!

Hi Eva, I love the idea of corn dogs… I’ve always wanted to try them, but never have. Cornmeal isn’t common here sadly… I’m sure I could find it if I looked online though – would just need to take a bit of a hit on the delivery cost but hey-ho, such is life.
Great idea for a wonderful little snack, and great job on making them vegetarian too – I find with sausages like these it’s pretty hard to tell the difference usually anyway because they’re all smoke flavouring and spices anyway!

Thanks Charles, they are rather easy to make so I would encourage you to try them. They would be a great little treat when William starts having birthday parties!
To be honest, I have never tried a commercially made version, but I’m guessing home made will always taste better!

Aww they are so cute! I can picture myself popping quite a few into my mouth. Sorry to hear about your illness Eva. I know how you feel, we’ve had the same for a while and have been passing it back and forth 😦 I hope you get better soon!

Thank you so much Lorraine, fortunately for JT we haven’t passed this one back and forth, it somehow prefers me (lucky me). It’s probably the worst cold I’ve had. But then again Summer colds are worse, I can’t imagine feeling like this in 40°C heat and humidity. Feel better soon.

So sorry your respiratory bug has hung on…this was one of the first winters in years that I’ve gotten sick, too. Now on to the corn dogs. Somehow the traditional ones have never appealed to me, but give me a quality mini corn bread muffin with a bit of a hot dog or sausage and it’s a whole different ball game! Well done!

Thanks for your kind words, Liz, it’s a pesky bug for sure — I do hope you get over yours too.
Yes the traditional one’s haven’t appealed to me either, maybe because they are deep fried and I’m not a fan, but these ones are actually pretty tasty.

These look perfect, Eva, and I’m sure they’d disappear whether you serve them on Game Day or Oscar Night. Well, I know they would around here. I agree with Charlie and am amazed that they’re vegetarian. I wouldn’t feel nearly so bad eating a dozen of them — in the kitchen out of sight of my guests. 🙂
Thanks for the mention — and reminder that I need to make more ketchup!

My pleasure John, the hot dogs actually taste pretty much like hot dogs (I made pigs in a blanket with them a few years ago and the kids couldn’t tell the difference!).

Eva, you know how fond I am of tiny snacks… Corn dogs are totally new to me and I love the way they look. So cute! I am surprised to see so much sugar in a savoury recipe. Most unusual.

Hi Sissi, yes, it does have a lot of sugar for a savoury recipe, but this one is a bit on the sweet side on purpose and if you end up putting the hot chili pepper flakes into it, you get that beautiful balance of sweet and hot that you and I both love. I left out the hot peppers because I intend on giving it to kids and they tend not to like spicy hot things.

Thank you for the explanation. With chili all this sugar makes much more sense of course and sounds deliciously hot and sweet.

Your mini corn dogs are so cute. I am thinking this would be great with Chinese sausages, am going to file your recipe away and play with it at a later date when I have a bit more time to experiment.

Hi Norma, yes I do believe the Chinese sausages would be delightful, but definitely more adult with the robust flavours. Perhaps an Asian flavoured dipping sauce would be lovely too. Can hardly wait to see what you do!

These are vegetarian? They don’t look it. I would have to say, I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a corn dog in my life. I feel I must have missed out on something. I can just imagine these being perfect for sitting in front of the TV to watch the game (or a movie if the game is over!) and having a few of these. How delicious xx
